Many types of mental illness are on the rise all over the United States. One of the main concerns, however, is that some people feel ashamed to admit that they have a problem. Thankfully, Mental Health Awareness Month 2019 aims to break this stigma. However, what is mental health awareness, and how can people like you get involved?
Who Hosts Mental Health Awareness Month?
No one person or organization actually hosts Mental Health Awareness Month. Instead, it’s an event that encourages everyone to participate. However, Mental Health America developed the idea.
In 2019, Mental Health Awareness Month celebrates its 70th anniversary. The hope is that it will continue to spread awareness of mental health problems for another 70 years and beyond. However, this tradition can’t continue without help from people like you.
Mental Health Awareness Month 2019
In 2019, May is Mental Health Awareness Month. Its purpose is to raise awareness about mental health problems. However, the overall goal is to change how people think and feel about mental disorders.
Each year, this month focuses on a new topic. In 2017, for example, the focus was “Risky Business.” In short, it focused on the behaviors that increase people’s chances of developing mental health illnesses.
In 2018, the month was focused on fitness. The idea was to spread awareness about how exercising and staying fit can hinder some mental disorders from developing. It also focused on how exercise can reduce the symptoms of some conditions, including depression.
For Mental Health Awareness Month 2019, Mental Health America has chosen to expand on last year’s focus with #4Mind4Body. Once again, it hopes to spread awareness that your mind and body work together. Taking care of one aspect helps you take care of the other.
Mental Health America Needs Your Help
While Mental Health America started Mental Health Awareness Month, the public makes it work. The organization needs people like you to spread awareness. For instance, you could hold your own special event about this year’s focus topic.
Do you need help coming up with ideas? Thankfully, Mental Health America has you covered. You can download a toolkit from the organization’s website to learn more about #4Mind4Body.
This toolkit is full of statistics, strategies and additional resources that you can use to spread awareness. It even includes sample tweets and Facebook posts that you can share on social media sites. Mental Health America has done the legwork, so all that you have to do is download the toolkit.
