Depression can come about for any number of reasons. It can also be gone in a few hours and sometimes take years to overcome. No matter how long you feel depressed, it might always seem like way too long and you need to know how to treat depression. Here are some tips on how to deal with depression if you are in it or wondering what you can do the next time around.
How to Deal with Depression
If you are experiencing some mild depression and are already in treatment for it, you may be wondering what you can be doing on your own time to help alleviate the symptoms. First and foremost, refrain from using substances like alcohol or illicit drugs to make yourself feel better. They will end up making you more depressed in the long run due to the chemical changes that they will make to your brain when using them regularly. Contacting a mental health treatment center or psychiatrist will help you evaluate your depression and decide on further treatment.
Along with professional help, here are some ways that people use to treat depression:
Join a Peer Support Group
Losing someone close to you, getting into an accident, or falling ill are terrible things to experience. There are groups out there where you can reach out to others going through the same thing. The peer support gained through these groups can be particularly helpful.
Do Something You Have Meant to for a Long Time
Have you always wanted to learn to play the piano, do yoga, join a drum circle, join a yacht club, golfing or bowling team? Do it; it may be tough to think about getting out and doing something that you enjoy. But by signing up, paying for it, and letting others know that you are going to do it, you will be accountable. You will be more likely to follow through on your promise to yourself if others are aware.
Work on getting better at meditating. You can do this easily with helpful videos online. Guided meditations are a great place to start. Who knows you may enjoy it so much that you go on a four-day non-speaking meditation retreat!
When to Get Help
There are many ways that you can work to get outside of your head when you feel depressed. You should not completely ignore your depression, but using healthy activities and eating right are great ways to escape feeling down all of the time.
The internet and self-help do not work as well as psychiatric therapy. If you are concerned about your depression about this and are not currently in treatment, looking to get treatment is a wonderful idea. You never know how a therapist or other type of doctor can help you.
Do not hesitate to get help one more minute, if:
- You think you feel depressed
- Bothered by your own feelings
- Having suicidal thoughts
- Regularly unable to complete tasks you had been able to
- Experienced an unfortunate event and are still upset about it
